On what initially threatened to be a cold, rainy day turned into a fantastic beach outing for our Year 11 Geographers.
The objective of the field trip was to deepen the students' understanding of the interacting processes at Karitane and Waikouaiti beaches and to observe the features created in these environments. However, natural processes are only one aspect of the narrative. Students also took the opportunity to explore and appreciate the significance of Huriawa Peninsula to Ngai Tahu, delving into the stories, including those surrounding the Pa.
Working in groups, students conducted measurements on longshore drift, wave energy, beach profiles, and sand porosity. They will now dedicate time in the classroom to analyse and present their findings from both Karitane and Waikouaiti.
A big thank you extends to Columba College, Otago University Geography Department, and the Phys Ed team for generously loaning equipment for our use on the day.
We eagerly anticipate seeing the results of the students' efforts.
