Librarian message

By Kelly Kinghorn | Posted: Thursday February 1, 2024

A big welcome to 2024 from the OBHS library. I am the school librarian, Mrs. Kinghorn, and I am looking forward to meeting all our new students over the coming days.

Our library is located at the heart of the school. We have heaps of great books and comfortable nooks for reading and studying. It is also a lively and versatile space where students can catch up with their friends, play a board game or card game, do some homework or research, hold a meeting, challenge themselves with our weekly quiz, and participate in any of our library events. We are open from 8am-4pm and students are welcome to use the space before and after school.

Chromebooks

The library has a limited supply of Chromebooks that can be issued to students for the day for use in class. These are available for one-off reasons (such as a student accidentally leaving their device at home) and they must be returned to the library at the end of the school day. As our supply is limited it is important that students remember to return them and don’t make a habit of forgetting their own devices. Those who need a device for more than one day should go and see Mr. Wright (IT specialist) or discuss this with their form teacher.

Reading

In my role my biggest priority is supporting students with their reading. As parents and caregivers one of the best things you can do is to encourage your sons to read. Studies show that there is a strong link between reading for pleasure and academic achievement. Apart from that, reading improves communication, lengthens attention spans, develops empathy, and helps manage stress. In our fast-paced, screen-dominated world, choosing to spend some of our leisure time reading is a very powerful choice. I am here to help our students find the right books for them, so please encourage your young men to visit our library and make time to read.
